It was a random Monday craving, so I instantaneously decided to try out Trattoria da Gianni at Crossroads, Banilad. The first glimpse of their interior brings nostalgic sense of home. Its bright, comfortable scheme and the well-crafted wooden tables and chairs are well put-together that gives a posh and stylish Italian ambiance. I’ve been to several Italian restaurants in Cebu (as it is my second favorite after Japanese fūdo) and Trattoria da Gianni didn’t seem to disappoint me.

A trattoria is an Italian-style eating establishment, less upscale than a ristorante, but more formal than an osteria. It’s pretty casual where food is always fabulous.

I had a tough time choosing what to order since there are a lot of selections on their menu. Eventually, I ordered that day’s special, Fresh Pasta Funghi Porci plus Tris Bruschetta and Milanese Cotoletta alla Bolognese.

The day’s special, Fresh Pasta Funghi Porci has an artisan quality pasta which is soft and chewy, a combination of both familiar and unique taste. I super love the idea of it being fresh and homemade. It also has a generous toppings of cheese, funghi (a type of mushroom) and black olives and cherry tomatoes.

Tris Bruschetta includes three types of bruschettas. Mozzarella and Garden Basil, fresh tomatoes and  Balsamic vinegar + Smoked Salmon and fresh Ricotta w/ Italian Parsley + Parma Ham, Figs and fresh Ricotta cheese. A perfect antipasti indeed.

Cotoletta alla Bolognese (Breaded Chicken or Pork topped with Prosciutto Cotto, Provolone cheese and tomato sauce), however is an instant favorite. I had the pork on this one and I have to congratulate the chefs for making such sumptuous masterpiece. I truly enjoyed this dish a lot.

The place is being managed by the father-daughter tandem, Italian-born Gianluca and Giorgina Guidicelli. Actor Mateo also frequent the place when he’s home in Cebu. He was even seen waitng tables during peak hours during the first few days after the opening. One interesting fact about the restaurant is that long-time home cooks, Gen and Antonia, (who have been working for the Guidicelli family for almost 30 years) ventured out to partner in the family business for the first time. No wonder every ingredient was in harmony considering 3 decades of their experience in cooking authentic Italian dishes is in play.

Trattoria da Gianni is a great place to hang out with good friends and family or celebrate a special occasion with a loved one. I couldn’t be happier to dine here again. The dessert line-up was mouthwatering, I just didn’t have more time to spare during my last visit. There are so much more in their menu that I would like to try. Will definitely be back with my friends this time.

Give Trattoria da Gianni a visit at Crossroads Mall, Banilad, a small compact area with various restaurants. They are open from 11AM to 10PM daily.
